INTRODUCTION: I will introduce the students to the overhand throw, its purpose, and the proper techiques involved in completing an overhand throw.

The students will be given some CUES that will be reiterated throughout the lesson and emphasized. These cues are LOAD, STEP, and FOLLOW THROUGH.

LOAD: Arm will be elevated above the shoulder at a 90 degree angle, and non-throwing hand will be pointed at the intended target.
STEP: The foot on the non-throwing side should step toward the target
FOLLOW THROUGH: The throwing arm follows through in a fluid motion releasing the ball towards the target.

WARM UP: (7-10 minutes)
I will direct the students through a series of stretching involving the arms. The students will then be split into groups of two. From this point, students will practice the throwing motion in a simulated game of catch WITHOUT a ball. I will give the students the cues as commands. For instance, "When I say load, all students should get into the loading phase of the throw". The cues will be in sequence and will gradually become faster until the students are going through the motion fluidly.

SKILL PRACTICE: (7-10 minutes)
Following the warmup activity, the students will remain in their pairs. Each pair of students will be given 3 balls alotted time to play catch with eachother. The students will remain the same distances apart, starting at 10 ft. They will gradually back up to 20 ft. throughout the entirity of the drill. Students will be given feedback and worked with on correcting their mechanics as needed.

SKILL ACTIVITY: (20-25 minutes)

Following the skill practice activity, the students will play in a game called spider ball.

Guidlines for the Game:
  • Students will be divided into teams of 15
  • Nets will be placed on each end of the court/field
  • 30 balls will be placed near center court/field
  • The game will begin on a whistle-blow in which the students will attempt to retrieve as many balls as they can from the center line
  • Students will then attempt to throw the ball into the opponents net using the overhand throw
  • A point will be counted for each ball that enters the net IN THE AIR
  • Any shot attempts that do not make it into the net, can be re-attempted until the game is complete
  • The game duration will be 3 minutes, OR, until all balls are inside of the net
  • Students will be required to throw from behind designated lines on the court any throw past those lines will not count as a point
  • Students are allowed as many throw attempts as possible within the time limit

Conclusion (1-3 minutes):
After the skill activity is played a few times, the students will be brought back to homebase to discuss the overhand throw. We will review the cues, and discuss the overhand throw as a class. This time will also be used to allow students to ask questions or make comments
